Hideki Matsuyama Secures Historic Win at Genesis Invitational: A Milestone Victory
Kyodo News

In a cinematic showdown at Riviera, Hideki Matsuyama turned what seemed improbable at the start of the day into a page of the history books by securing a victory at the 2024 Genesis Invitational. Coming from six shots back, Matsuyama's ridiculous and sensational final round of 9-under (62) didn't just win him the tournament—it etched his name in the record books.

A Historic Victory

Matsuyama's win at Riviera wasn't just another victory; it was a moment of historic significance. After clinching his ninth PGA Tour win, Matsuyama has now surpassed K.J. Choi's record for the most tour wins by an Asian-born player.

The milestone achievement was powered by a stunning comeback performance on Sunday afternoon. His win marked the lowest closing round by a winner in Riviera's storied history.

"Yeah, you know, to win in this tournament was one of my goals ever since I became pro. After Tiger being the host, that goal became a lot more bigger. A little disappointed that I wasn't able to take a picture with Tiger today." Matsuyama reflected following his historic comeback.

Woods, the host of the Genesis Invitational, also made his comeback to competitive golf in this week's tournament, before withdrawing due to illness

Final Round Finesse

The final round at Riviera was a testament to Matsuyama's abilities. The former Master's winner had his talents on full display. Particularly on the 15th hole, where he dropped an absolute dart with a 6-iron from 187 yards into the breeze, securing a tap-in birdie that would wind up being crucial to his victory surge on the back nine.

The par-3 16th only served to further highlight Matsuyama's absolutely magical back nine, with another birdie that kept the momentum in his favor, further solidifying his lead in what was once a packed leaderboard just minutes before.

Matsuyama's streak of brilliance on the back nine, including a chip on the 17th that set him up for yet another birdie, left basically everyone in awe, including Xander Schauffele who played the day in the final pairing alongside Patrick Cantlay who had led the field for much of the weekend.

"Once I saw Hideki finishing at 17 under, it was a bit of a deflater, I'm sure for the rest of the field. But hats off to him, it's incredible. He's done it a few times now, shooting lights out on Sunday."

Overcoming Challenges

The road to Matsuyama's record-setting victory wasn't straightforward. A battle with a back injury and a dip in form had raised doubts about his ability to return to the winner's circle. His victory at the Genesis is as much of a personal triumph over those challenges as it was significant in the FedEx Cup standings.

"First of all, to clear the information, it's been my neck that's been hurting. It's been really something that's been bothering for long time. Since the start of this year, it's been getting better, a lot better. There's no -- it's stress-free when I'm sleeping, too, so I think I had this feeling of I can do something special maybe this year." Matsuyama stated following the victory.

On Tap at the Tee Box

With the major season ahead, Matsuyama’s win at the Genesis Invitational only propels him into the conversation of potential major winners. With Matsuyama playing at the level he is currently, coupled with his pedigree in high-profile events, it would be unwise to write him off as a true contender. Especially given the display he put on for the golfing word at Riviera on Sunday.
