Former U.S. Women's Open winner set for final competitive tournament of career

One of the most famous players in the LPGA this century is set for the final competitive tournament of her career at the upcoming U.S. Women's Open.

Michelle Wie West will wrap up her legendary two-decade career on the tour at the major, which begins on Thursday and is scheduled to run through Sunday at Pebble Beach.

The 33-year-old's only major victory came at the 2014 U.S. Women's Open at Pinehurst Resort. Wie West has a pair of runner-up finishes at major events (2005 Women's PGA Championship, 2014 Chevron Championship) and twice finished tied for third place (2005 Women's British Open, 2017 Women's British Open).

"Gosh, I hope it's in the final group with everyone watching," Wie West said, referring to the thought about her last walk up to the 18th hole, per ESPN's Paolo Uggetti. "That would just be so incredible."

It was reported in May 2022 that the Honolulu, Hawaii native was planning to step away from competitive golf following last year's U.S. Women's Open. Wie West missed the cut at last spring's event, finishing with a 5-over 147 through two rounds at Pine Needles in Southern Pines, North Carolina.

"When I was done with Pine Needles, I was like, oh, but I have Pebble next year," she said, according to Uggetti. "There is no Pebble next year."

Wie West became the youngest player to ever qualify for an LPGA event in 2002 at age 12. She is a five-time LPGA event winner, with her most recent victory coming at the 2018 HSBC Women's World Championship.

Per Uggetti, Wie West said she would quit playing professionally once she had kids. She now has a toddler and hasn't played a "true, full LPGA Tour schedule since 2018." According to the report, Wie West "really, really wanted to play longer."

"In an ideal world, I wish I was still out on tour and playing. Unfortunately, it's just I had to make a hard decision with my body. It is hard. It is hard to be a mom out here," she said. "You have to make a lot of sacrifices. I just had to make a hard medical decision and also a personal decision."
