From its amateur ranks on up to the pro tour, golf remains one of the most challenging of all sports. So when a course requires signage indicating the extreme  difficulty of the task ahead, even the world's most elite golfers can appear dazed and confused on their way to the clubhouse. Bethpage’s Black Course has hosted four PGA events: the 2002 and 2009 U.S. Opens and The Barclays in 2012 and 2016. Tiger Woods was the only golfer to shoot under par in 2002, while five posted scores under 70 in 2009's Open. The course was lengthened and the par pumped up to 71 for the 2012 Barclays, which allowed for lower scores. Patrick Reed — your 2018 Masters champ — was the last golfer to win at Bethpage, carding a 9-under at the 2016 Barclays. Reed enters the 2019 PGA Championship at 70-to-1.

Spieth has competed in 13 tournaments this season but failed to crack the leaderboard's top 20 to date. He shot 11-under at this past weekend's Byron Nelson but carded a pedestrian even-par 71 on Sunday in a tournament where 23-under was needed to win. Spieth needs the PGA Championship to complete his career grand slam but hasn't won a tournament since the 2017 British Open after ranking third in the world this time last year. Still only 25 years old, Spieth finished tied for 10th — four strokes off the lead — at the 2016 Barclays at Bethpage Black.

Tony Finau

Odds: 35-to-1
2019 wins: zero
2019 top 10 finishes: two

Since his 11-under, fifth-place finish at the 2019 Masters, Finau has missed the cut at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans and placed T-60 (plus-3) at the Wells Fargo two weeks ago. So the 29-year-old is trending in the wrong direction ahead of the PGA Championship. The great news for those looking to back this long shot is that Finau shot 4-under par and placed 12th at Bethpage Black during the 2016 Barclays. So these glimpses of greatness we have seen — like at the Masters last month — are not blips on the radar. Finau can hang with the favorites.

Bryson DeChambeau

Odds: 35-to-1
2019 wins: one
2019 top 10 finishes: three

At 25 years old, DeChambeau has plenty of golf ahead of him, but a quick glance back at his 2019 PGA Tour resume illustrates how much he has to learn before he can be considered one of the game's greats. His first-place finish at the Shriners Open to kick off his season was followed by five consecutive top 15 finishes. However, in his last six events, DeChambeau has placed no better than tied for 20th and missed one cut. A great example of his growing pains on the PGA Tour is carding a 66 in the first round of the Masters only to shoot 75 the next day to give it all back. DeChambeau now faces his toughest challenge this season, as he'll make his Bethpage Black debut as the eighth-ranked golfer in the world.

Xander Schauffele

Odds: 28-to-1
2019 Wins: two
2019 top 10 finishes: four

In addition to his two tour wins and four top 10 finishes, Schauffele has placed inside the top 25 in nine of his 12 events this season. Prior to missing the cut at THE PLAYERS, he placed 15th or better in six of seven tour events. In his only tour appearance since his 12-under, second-place finish at the Masters, the 25-year-old carded a 75 on Sunday of the RBC Heritage, shot 5-over for the tournament and placed T-63. At last year's PGA at Bellerive, Schauffele shot back-to-back rounds of 67 to move to 6-under before a Sunday score of 2-over, 72. Although he joined the PGA in 2015, this will be Schauffele's first event at Bethpage.

Tommy Fleetwood

Odds: 28-to-1
2019 wins: zero
2019 top 10 finishes: four

Hosting the 2019 British Masters was an honor and a curse for Tommy Fleetwood. Despite this past Sunday's eighth-place finish (minus-10), the 28-year-old rising star had to quickly hop on a trans-Atlantic flight prior to stepping foot on Bethpage Black for the first time ever come Monday. Jet lag and the Black Course do not mix. Prior to the British Masters, Fleetwood placed second at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans where he and teammate Sergio Garcia torched the course to card 23-under.

Odds: 28-to-1
2019 wins: one
2019 top 10 finishes: three

Prior to missing the cut at the RBC Heritage, Molinari finished top five in three of his previous four tournaments, highlighted by an 11-under, fifth place at the Masters. The defending British Open champion has played Bethpage twice with a 27th-place finish at the 2009 U.S. Open and a missed cut at the 2016 Barclays. However, the 36-year-old PGA tour late bloomer has lingered atop majors leaderboards for much of the past two seasons, including a sixth-place finish at Bellerive Country Club and a second-place finish at Quail Hollow the past two PGA Championships. Yet, following that missed cut at RBC and below-average European Tour performances (T-30; T-63), one should wonder if Molinari's ball striking a tree branch at Augusta and thus derailing his bid for a green jacket lingers in the back of his mind.

Jason Day

Odds: 22-to-1
2019 wins: Zero
2019 top 10 finishes: five

If not for a 73 in the third round of this year's Masters, Jason Day could be the one sporting the green jacket. With second and fourth round scores of 67 and 11-under for the tournament, respectively, the Aussie to had to settle for a fifth-place tie. Day's Bethpage Black experience features two impressive performances, at the 2012 and 2016 Barclays. He shot 1-under in his debut before an incredible 7-under in 2016, which was just two shots off the lead but strong enough to finish fourth.

Justin Rose

Odds: 20-to-1
2019 wins: one
2019 top 10 finishes: five

It shouldn't come as a surprise that Rose is among the favorites to win the PGA Championship after four top-five finishes between the PGA and European Tours. He bounced back from a Masters missed cut to shoot 11-under and finish third at the Wells Fargo Championship two weeks ago.  With that said, Rose's best finish at Bethpage is a tie for 31st at the 2016 Barclays when he shot even par. In his two other Black Course tour starts, Rose shot 2-over at the 2012 Barclays to finish T-46 and missed the 2009 U.S. Open cut.

Rickie Fowler

Rickie Fowler

Odds: 20-to-1
2019 wins: win
2019 top 10 finishes: five

To cut down on the wear and tear of a long PGA Tour schedule that now includes two majors five weeks apart, Fowler has played only once since the Masters (minus-10, T-9.) He carded a 9-under to finish tied for fourth at the Wells Fargo Championship earlier this month. In only his second season on tour, Fowler missed the 2009 U.S. Open cut at Bethpage but shot 1-under at the 2012 and 6-under at the 2016 Barclays when he finished tied for seventh place. Like Jon Rahm, Fowler's power off the tee (302.6 yards per drive) will come in handy this weekend.

Jon Rahm

Jon Rahm

Odds: 20-to-1
2019 wins: one
2019 top 10 finishes: eight

Rahm boasts eight top 10 finishes in 12 events played this season, which is part of the reason why he sits eighth in the FedEx standings. While he's still searching for his first major victory, Rahm tied for fourth at last year's PGA Championship at Bellerive. He's making his Bethpage Black debut this week, where his power off the tee will come in handy at this lengthy course. The 24-year-old Spaniard averages 305.8 yards off the tees, which ranks 20th on the PGA tour, while his 1.554 strokes gained per round ranks ninth.

Rory McIlroy

Odds: 11-to-1
2019 wins: one
2019 top 10 finishes: eight

One of the favorites heading into the 2019 Masters, McIroy posted an underachieving 5-under to tie for 21st. In his only tour appearance since, he shot 7-under (T-8) at the Wells Fargo Championship. The 73 (plus-2) on Sunday wasn't a great sign if he used the tournament as a PGA Championship tune-up. McIroy finished tied for 10th at the 2009 U.S. Open (debut) at Bethpage and 19th and 34th, respectively, at two Bethpage Barclays.

Tiger Woods

Tiger Woods
Rob Schumacher-USA TODAY Sports

Odds: 11-to-1
2019 wins: one
2019 top 10 finishes: three

While Tiger hasn't played a round on the PGA Tour since winning the 2019 Masters, he was recently awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Back in December, Woods committed to playing a lighter schedule this season. So his post-Masters absence shouldn't come as a surprise. Tiger has played 12 rounds at Bethpage Black with a 70.2 scoring average per round. When he shot minus-3 to win the 2002 Open, it was his eighth major championship, while a slow start in 2009 cost him, his even score for the tournament placing him in a tie for sixth.

Dustin Johnson

Dustin Johnson
Rob Schumacher-USA TODAY Sports

Odds: 10-to-1
2019 wins: 1
2019 top 10 finishes: six

After shooting 12-under and finishing second to Tiger Woods at the 2019 Masters, Johnson played RBC Heritage at Hilton Head the following week. He was atop the leaderboard heading into the final round but shot 7-over on holes 11-15 in an epic Sunday collapse before finishing 4-under, tied for 28th. The good news is Johnson has placed inside the top 10 in five of his past six stroke play tournaments, and it's why he remains ranked the No. 1 golfer in the world.

Brooks Koepka

Odds: 10-to-1
2019 wins: one
2019 top 10 finishes: four

The defending PGA champ shredded Augusta National to jump out to an early Masters lead before he settled for a 12-under, second-place finish. Koepka has now placed sixth or better in six of his past nine majors with three wins — PGA and U.S. Open twice. Despite carding a 16-under, he placed tied for 22nd at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans and finished fourth (minus-20) at the rain-delayed AT&T Byron Nelson last weekend. Koepka's only Bethpage Black Course experience came during the 2016 Barclays where he finished 70th.
