Broncos Shut Down Starter for the Season
Isaiah J. Downing-USA TODAY Sports

The Denver Broncos got bad news this week with regards to injured defensive back K'Waun Williams. Williams was sidelined during the preseason with an ankle injury, and he is unlikely to return according to a report from Mike Klis.

"Tough news for Broncos' CB K'Waun Williams," Klis reported on Twitter/X. "The foot injury didn't come around. Per source, Williams will have another surgery on his foot Monday in NC. Dr. Anderson will be the surgeon. Rehab is 3 months so unless Broncos make the playoffs he'll be done for season."

With the Broncos sitting at 1-5, the NFL playoffs appear to be unlikely. This looks to be a season-ending surgery and could end Williams's tenure with the Broncos.

Williams signed a two-year deal prior to last season as a free agent from the San Francisco 49ers. The 32-year old was one of the Broncos' top performers on defense last season, but he battled injuries last year as well.

He missed three games in 2022 with torn ligaments in his wrist and hand, after which he sported a massive cast.

Williams is scheduled to be a free agent after this year. His age and injury history work against him in getting a new contract for 2024.

The Broncos did get good news on the injury front with the return of edge rusher Baron Browning. Browning has been on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list all season, but he looks set to make his 2023 debut against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.

Head coach Sean Payton said Browning would be on a pitch count, worked in slowly if he does see the field against the Packers.

Payton is excited to see the third-year player back on the field, telling reporters on Friday "He's strong and physical. He's explosive. There's some players that are heavy handed. He's one of those guys."
