Which songs are turning 25 in 2024?

Back in 1999, the world was somewhat of an odd state of affairs. From the predicted Y2K bug causing massive panic among people to the launch of Napster turning the music industry upside down, people had to be there to understand its nuances, technology advances, and pop culture moments. 

1999 also arguably became one of the decade's best years for music. Hip-hop continued to elevate as a genre, Latin artists saw massive success in pop mainstream, and boy bands were all the rage. Let's journey back in time and check out some classic songs celebrating their 25th anniversary in 2024.

Christina Aguilera already had fans talking after her 1998 track "Reflection," and people were curious how her debut album would sound. Her self-titled album was led by the hit single "Genie in a Bottle." On the track, she uses references to being a magical genie as she describes her sexual desires: "If you wanna be with me / Baby, there's a price to pay / I'm a genie in a bottle / You gotta rub me the right way."

TLC was very adamant about the type of men who would make advances at them on "No Scrubs." Co-written by Kandi Burruss, Tameka "Tiny" Cottle, and Kevin "She'kspere" Briggs, "No Scrubs" is about women paying dust to those men who aren't worth their time. As they sing on the hook, "No, I don't want no scrub / A scrub is a guy that can't get no love from me / Hangin' out the passenger side of his best friend's ride / Trying to holla at me."

A special someone has captured Faith Hill's heart on her hit single "Breathe." On the track, Hill describes the comforting and happy feelings of being with someone she's spending her life with. Her feelings are evident on the hook, singing, "And I can feel you breathe, it's washing over me / And suddenly I'm melting into you / There's nothing left to prove / Baby, all we need is just to be."

By the time Latin rock band Santana released their eighteenth album, Supernatural, they made sure to work with several contemporary artists. One of which was Matchbox Twenty's frontman Rob Thomas, who provided vocals on the album's lead single, "Smooth." The song earned the group a few Grammy Awards, including Song of the Year and Record of the Year.

Mariah Carey is a little love-sick with someone unfaithful on her track "Heartbreaker." Teaming up with Jay-Z, Carey knows she shouldn't keep giving her lover a chance, but it's something about him that keeps drawing her back. As she sings on the hook, "Heartbreaker, you got the best of me / But I just keep on coming back incessantly / Oh why, did you have to run your game on me / I should have known right from the start you'd go and break my heart."

Destiny's Child is about wanting a man who continues to provide in a relationship on their song "Bills, Bills, Bills." On the track, the group highlights how a partner starts buying things and going places but gets comfortable and becomes more of a leech. As they sing on the hook, "Can you pay me bills? / Can you pay my telephone bills? / Do you pay my automo' bills? / If you did, then maybe we could chill."

The album's second single, "All Star," tells the story of a person who doesn't truly believe in his intelligence but knows he can shine by doing things his way. On the third single, "(You Drive Me) Crazy," Spears details how a lover has her acting out of character but in a good way. It's evident from the first verse as she sings, "Baby, I'm so into you / You got that something, what can I do? / Baby, you spin me around, oh / The earth is moving, but I can't feel the ground."

Although it was seven years since Dr. Dre released his album The Chronic, by the time he released his 1999 album 2001, he wanted to make sure he had music for any naysayers who wrote him off. He teamed up with frequent collaborator Snoop Dogg on the lead single "Still D.R.E." Dre makes sure to let people know that he still has the hip hop game on lock as he says, "Still taking my time to perfect the beat and I still got love for the streets, it's the D.R.E."

By the time Limp Bizkit released their sophomore album, Significant Other, they wanted to explore more hip-hop elements mixed with their usual nu-metal sound. It's no wonder they called on DJ Premier to produce their single "N 2 Gether Now," featuring Wu-Tang Clan member Method Man. Premier has also told the story of how he wasn't on board with working with the rock band at first but was soon convinced after meeting with Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst and knowing Method would be on the track.

The eponymous single produced by Mannie Fresh finds Wayne detailing his daily life of living on his block. The song became a top-40 hit on Billboard's Hot Rap Songs chart.

Such was the case with the 1999 single "Wild Wild West," the lead track to the film of the same name. Sampling Stevie Wonder's hit song "I Wish," Smith teamed up with Kool Moe Dee and Dru Hill on the track. "Wild Wild West" became a No. 1 hit for Smith.

One of the most popular songs in 1999 was Lou Bega's hit single "Mambo No. 5 (A Little Bit Of...)." It was the perfect upbeat tune that made people show off their best moves on the dance floor. "Mambo No. 5 (A Little Bit Of...)" reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100.
