The 20 worst binge watches of 2018

The 20 worst binge watches of 2018

It's 2018, there's too much TV, and the streaming services really don't make it easy when they drop all these episodes of just one show at the same time. But the point is the binge-watching experience, and while there are some good ones, there are also some bad ones. Sometimes it's the show that's bad, but sometimes it's really just that it's not made for binge-watching (yet, unfortunately, made for binge-watching.)

Note: Because this involves shows that drop all their episodes at once, don't expect to see ones like "The Handmaid’s Tale" (or a number of Hulu shows, actually, thanks to their weekly drops) or "The Romanoffs."

"Altered Carbon," Season 1 (Netflix)

"Altered Carbon," Season 1 (Netflix)

Technically, a series that’s pretty much all about visuals over plot is actually a “perfect” binge-watch, as you can just turn off your brain and let the pretty pictures overtake you. But the point is actually supposed to be the show itself, and while "Altered Carbon" isn’t bad, again, the visuals pretty much work to distract from otherwise mediocrity. “Tedious” is definitely a word that’s been used to describe the show.

"The Man in the High Castle," Season 3 (Amazon Video)

"The Man in the High Castle," Season 3 (Amazon Video)

There was a nearly two-year hiatus between Season 2 and Season 3 of this show, and really, the best thing about the new season is that the show has gone so off-the-radar it isn’t quite the critical fodder it was in its sophomore season.

"Insatiable," Season 1 (Netflix)

"Insatiable," Season 1 (Netflix)

Really, this is more about all the rigmarole about the series before it even came out. "Insatiable" has its supporters — and it really has its detractors — but it rarely had anyone who went into the experience without having first seen all of the discourse surrounding it. Ignorance perhaps would’ve made this binging experience bliss.

"Disjointed," Season 1, part 2 (Netflix)

"Disjointed," Season 1, part 2 (Netflix)

The creators (including Chuck Lorre), the cast (led by Kathy Bates), the premise (“lol marijuana, right?”). Seriously, what was everyone thinking?

"13 Reasons Why," Season 2 (Netflix)

"13 Reasons Why," Season 2 (Netflix)

Why anyone thinks the teen suicide show is binge-worthy is perhaps the television world’s greatest mystery.

"Everything Sucks!," Season 1 (Netflix)

"Everything Sucks!," Season 1 (Netflix)

This is kind of the opposite of the "Insatiable" thing: It just hurts now to even consider binge-watching it, considering it was a sweet, relatively critically well-received show that seemingly got canceled out of nowhere, as did "Luke Cage." But at least that got to make it past a first season. Everything sucks, indeed.

"The Good Cop," Season 1 (Netflix)

"The Good Cop," Season 1 (Netflix)

Talk about a quick Netflix cancellation: This Tony Danza/Josh Groban (so weird) series dropped on Sept. 21 and was canceled on Nov. 13. But when it comes to all the actually good shows on TV with “good” in the title, this less-than-good one perhaps had to die so the rest could survive.

"Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams," Season 1 (Amazon Video)

"Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams," Season 1 (Amazon Video)

This is one of those binge-watches that isn’t even technically a bad show, but this anthology really is uneven in terms of quality. And the episodes — which are rather slow, for the most part — are kind of a few minutes longer than they really need to be. That’s the struggle.

"Ozark," Season 2 (Netflix)

"Ozark," Season 2 (Netflix)

Oh yes, "Ozark": the series that really needs to just turn on a light. If you like not being able to see what’s actually happening on your screen, then maybe this actually is a good binge-watch. I am not a crackpot!

"Marvel’s Iron Fist," Season 2 (Netflix)

"Marvel’s Iron Fist," Season 2 (Netflix)

Can you really blame Netflix and Marvel for at least trying one more time with this show and character after the first season? Oh, you can? Yeah, you can.

"UnREAL," Season 4 (Hulu)

"UnREAL," Season 4 (Hulu)

From critical darling to quietly canceled and dumped onto Hulu in just four seasons.

"Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan," Season 1 (Amazon Video)

"Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan," Season 1 (Amazon Video)

Jack Ryan is not an interesting or cool character, and in case you forgot that, there’s always this show.

"A Little Help with Carol Burnett," Season 1 (Netflix)

"A Little Help with Carol Burnett," Season 1 (Netflix)

You probably missed that Carol Burnett had a new television series in 2018, one in which she interacted with lot of precocious children. Sorry to inform you.

"Paradise PD," Season 1 (Netflix)

"Paradise PD," Season 1 (Netflix)

You know what? If you liked "Brickleberry," you’ll probably be down for this. But “if you liked 'Brickleberry'” is definitely a specific qualifier.

"Neo Yokio Pink Christmas” (Netflix)

"Neo Yokio Pink Christmas” (Netflix)

This actually hasn’t premiered yet (Dec. 7). But please note the Ezra Koenig-created, Jaden Smith-led anime series has a 31 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, with the general consensus for its first season in 2017 being: “lacking an interesting plot or stimulating social commentary. Neo Yokio is a missed opportunity bound to bore or befuddle casual viewers and frustrate hardcore anime fans.” What. Is. Happening?

"House of Cards," Season 6 (Netflix)

"House of Cards," Season 6 (Netflix)

Finally, the show becomes the Claire Underwood Hour… and wow is it a mess. And that’s how it goes out.

17 of 20

"Sick Note," Season 1 (Netflix)

"Sick Note," Season 1 (Netflix)

A waste of its talented cast (led by Rupert Grint and Nick Frost), "Sick Note" is also a waste of the audience’s time. There are plenty of solid comedies about terrible people on Netflix and from the U.K., all very much available as alternatives to this show.

"Sick Note," Season 2 (Netflix)

"Sick Note," Season 2 (Netflix)

Seriously, a real waste. But the second season — replacing Don Johnson with Lindsay Lohan — is somehow an upgrade.

"Riverdale," Season 2 (Netflix)

"Riverdale," Season 2 (Netflix)

This is 100 percent a cheat, but the world needs to be reminded of how much of a mess this season of television was. Mobster Archie, y’all.

"All Night," Season 1 (Hulu)

"All Night," Season 1 (Hulu)

Just watch "Can’t Hardly Wait."
