The 20 best legacy sequels

When a movie becomes a huge success and a cultural landmark, there’s always pressure for the sequel to live up to that same standard and honor its impact. This has become common through legacy sequels, particularly over the last ten years. These films usually pay homage to their predecessors by bringing back iconic characters and introducing new ones to carry on the story or franchise. It doesn’t always work, but it’s movie magic when it does.

'Halloween'

'Halloween'
Universal Pictures

There have been countless sequels to John Carpenter’s masterpiece, but 2018’s Halloween disregards all of those to stand as a direct continuation of the 1978 classic. Just as she did all those years ago, an aged Laurie Strode faces Michael Myers once again, with OG scream queen Jamie Lee Curtis reprising her role. While a new generation of characters is introduced, including Laurie’s granddaughter, the film’s key focus is Laurie’s trauma and her mission to end the boogeyman’s reign of terror.
