Madonna rallies behind Britney Spears: 'This is a violation of human rights'

Madonna has never shied away from saying exactly what's on her mind, and she is taking the same unfiltered approach to her public support of Britney Spears.

"Give this woman her life back," Madonna wrote over a photo of herself wearing a white "Britney Spears" t-shirt in his Instagram Story (h/t People). "Slavery was abolished so long ago! Death to the greedy patriarchy that has been doing this to women for centuries. This is a violation of human rights! Britney we coming to get you out of jail!"

The 62-year-old Queen of Pop was referencing Spears' ongoing legal conservatorship battle that has taken quite a few crucial turns over the last two weeks, beginning with Spears addressing the court for the first time in two years on June 23.

"I want changes going forward," the Grammy winner said, in part. "I deserve changes. I was told I have to sit down and be evaluated, again, if I want to end the conservatorship. Ma’am, I didn’t know I could petition the conservatorship to end it. I’m sorry for my ignorance, but I honestly didn’t know that."

She continued: "But honestly, I don’t think I owe anyone to be evaluated. I’ve done more than enough. I don’t feel like I should even be in room with anyone to offend me by trying to question my capacity of intelligence, whether I need to be in this stupid conservatorship or not. I’ve done more than enough."

Elsewhere in her 24-minute statement, Spears said she is "traumatized" and likened past treatment she's endured under her conservatorship to slavery ("Ma'am, I'm not here to be anyone's slave").

Spears was initially placed under a court-ordered temporary conservatorship in 2008, which gave her father, Jamie Spears, control over her estate and person. Jamie stepped down as primary conservator in late 2019 due to his own declining health, but his 39-year-old daughter has been petitioning to remove him altogether.

Bessemer Trust, a wealth management firm listed as the co-conservator of Spears' estate, filed to resign last week, while her court-appointed attorney, Sam Ingham III, as well as her manager of 25 years, Larry Rudolph, resigned from their respective positions earlier this week.

Jodi Montgomery, meanwhile, has "no plans to step down" as the pop icon's temporary conservator of the person.

Madonna is far from the first A-lister to throw weight behind the #FreeBritney movement. Eyebrows were particularly raised recently when younger sister, Jamie Lynn Spears, ex-husband Kevin Federline, ex-boyfriend Justin Timberlake, and Mickey Mouse Club co-star Christina Aguilera each publicly voiced support.
