Lena Waithe takes center stage in first 'Master of None' Season 3 trailer

Lena Waithe already earned a Primetime Emmy for her writing on Master of None, and now the 36-year-old will carry the Netflix series' third season.

The Season 3 trailed arrived Monday:

In it, Waithe's character Denise and her partner Alicia (Naomi Ackie) explore a hypothetical situation in which Denise asks Alicia out on a date while snippets of their relationship flicker across the screen. "I'd say yes then," Alicia says. "I'd say yes now."

The YouTube caption explains in more detail what lays ahead in the five-episode arc: "Directed by series co-creator and Emmy winner Aziz Ansari, and scripted by Ansari and Waithe, this new season is a modern love story that intimately illustrates the ups and downs of marriage, struggles with fertility, and personal growth both together and apart. Fleeting romantic highs meet crushing personal losses while existential questions of love and living are raised."

Master of None debuted in November 2015. The first two seasons orbited around Dev (Ansari), an indecisive 30-year-old actor in New York City, with Waithe in a supporting role. Season 2 hit the streaming service in May 2017, then the dramedy went on a hiatus following 2018 sexual misconduct accusations against Ansari.

Season 3 is set to drop May 23. Check out a taste of Netflix's May slate below.
