Kanye West claims long-awaited 'Donda' album was put out by Universal without his approval

Kanye West, who reportedly filed a petition to legally change his name to Ye, made a public claim against Universal Music Group on Instagram after his long-awaited 10th studio album Donda dropped Sunday, (Aug. 29):

"UNIVERSAL PUT MY ALBUM OUT WITHOUT MY APPROVAL AND THEY BLOCKED JAIL 2 FROM BEING ON THE ALBUM," the 44-year-old rapper, producer and fashion mogul wrote.

Donda was distributed by Def Jam, and the label falls under Universal Music Group's umbrella.

Variety provided more context:

"Representatives for Universal had no comment on the allegation, but sources at the company called it 'preposterous.'

"His mention of 'JAIL 2' refers to the album’s 24th track, 'Jail Pt 2,' which was originally unavailable to stream when the album first released. Around 1 p.m. ET, the song became available. Typically, when a song on an album is blocked from streaming on a service such as Spotify, the song has not been cleared legally because of a copyright conflict or similar issue.

"The track—and its counterpart, 'Jail'—has been a cause for controversy over the past few days, as the former features both Marilyn Manson, who has been accused of sexual assault by several women, and DaBaby, who made headlines earlier in the month with his homophobic comments. Both Manson and DaBaby made appearances at West’s fourth Donda listening event on Thursday in Chicago, causing immediate backlash on social media.

West began teasing Donda, named after his late mother, last summer. The 22-time Grammy winner then previewed the album at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on July 22, which was exclusively streamed live on Apple Music, and pegged July 23 as its release date. That date was changed to Aug. 7 before actually arriving early Sunday (Aug. 29).

Regardless of how it finally made its way into the world, 27-track Donda has broken the record previously held by Olivia Rodrigo's Sour as the most-streamed album in a 24-hour period this year, according to Variety.
