Jamie Lee Curtis opens up about daughter Ruby's trans journey: 'I'm a grateful student'

Jamie Lee Curtis and her daughter, Ruby, graced the pages of People this week to discuss the 25-year-old's transgender journey.

"It's speaking a new language," said Curtis, 62, who shares Ruby and 34-year-old Annie with husband Christopher Guest. "It's learning new terminology and words. I am new at it. I am not someone who is pretending to know much about it. And I'm going to blow it, I'm going to make mistakes. I would like to try to avoid making big mistakes."

Ruby came out as trans last year, and while she wasn't able to tell her parents to their faces and ended up texting it, she "wasn't worried. They had been so accepting of me my entire life."

Curtis explained that she hadn't any idea that Ruby was trans but knew her then-son "had a boyfriend" and "used the word bi." The 62-year-old actress admitted to occasionally messing up Ruby's pronouns, but Ruby assured that she doesn't "get mad at them for it."

The "Halloween" star added: "I'm not proselytizing, and I'm not trying to force-feed something to people. I'm simply saying, 'This is our family's experience.' I am here to support Ruby. That is my job. Just as it is to care and love and support her older sister Annie in her journeys. I'm a grateful student. I'm learning so much from Ruby. The conversation is ongoing. But I want to know: How can I do this better?"

Curtis first opened up about her youngest child being trans in a cover story for AARP The Magazine in late July, as detailed by writer Meg Grant:

"Possibly one of the biggest 'old ideas' that Curtis has shed recently is the notion that gender is fixed. With her younger child's permission, Curtis reveals that she and Guest 'have watched in wonder and pride as our son became our daughter Ruby. And she and her fiancé will get married next year at a wedding that I will officiate.' Ruby, now 25, is a computer gaming editor. Older sister Annie, 34, is married and a dance instructor. Curtis says she has no grandchildren—'Not yet, but I do hope to.'"
