Is 'Ally McBeal' finally getting revived?

Ally McBeal was a smash  hit when it ran on Fox from 1997 to 2002, and according to TVLine, a new generation is about to get a glimpse into the personal life and career of the titular lawyer.

"An Ally McBeal limited series revival is in the early stages of development, with titular leading lady Calista Flockhart being eyed to reprise her iconic role," TVLine's Michael Ausiello exclusively reported Friday. "The series’ creator, David E. Kelley, would be involved in the potential sequel series an an exec producer, but a female auteur would likely take the showrunner reins, as Kelley himself previously hinted."

Ally McBeal was just one of Kelley's numerous Hollywood home runs. The 11-time Primetime Emmy winner also created television series Doogie Howser, M.D., The Practice, Boston Legal, Big Little Lies and Big Sky

While discussing the second season of HBO's Big Little Lies with The Hollywood Reporter in May 2018, Kelley also commented on a long-demanded McBeal reboot:

"I don't really have an interest in going backward, myself. In fact, I've not even seen the shows after I've made them. I do think because of the gender politics that were so part and parcel of Ally McBeal, it's become very relevant and ripe. So, I'd be open to the idea of Ally McBeal being done again, but I don't think it should be done by me. If it were going to be done, it really should be done by a woman. If it's going to be new, it should be new and different. And I did it: 100 hours."

We last saw Ally moving back to New York City to be with her estranged daughter, Maddie (Hayden Panettiere). The series also starred Regina Hall, Portia de Rossi, Jane Krakowski, Lucy Liu, Greg Germann, and more, and won four Golden Globes across five seasons.

One of those awards went to Flockhart, who was also nominated for three Primetime Emmys as outstanding lead actress in a comedy series. The 56-year-old actress most recently played Cat Grant in 25 episodes on The CW's Supergirl.
