HBO releases first trailer for new Tina Turner documentary

Well, this is simply the best news.

Tuesday morning, the first Tina  teaser trailer was shared. The two-hour HBO original documentary will delve deeper into Tina Turner's iconic life and career than ever before, and the 81-year-old "couldn't be more excited" for the "never before seen look" to drop March 27.

The trailer is narrated by Turner, speaking nostalgically about her mother, as footage of her meteoric rise to the tune of "Proud Mary":

"My mother, she used to sit in the window of the kitchen when she was making dinner on Sundays," Turner says. "I used to just watch her. I thought she was so pretty. One day, she wasn't in that window. She was never in it again. I wanted her to come for me. And I waited. She never did. And it's all right. You know why? I'm a girl from a cotton field that pulled myself above the destruction and the mistakes. And I'm here for you."

Turner was born Anna Mae Bullock in Tennessee. She was given her stage name by Ike Turner, with whom she would begin performing and enter a destructive romantic relationship. The eight-time Grammy Award winner has previously been publicly vulnerable several times about the abuse she suffered, such as in her 1986 memoir I, Tina, which eventually led the release of 1993 film What's Love Got to Do With It. Once Turner escaped the tumultuous partnership, she released debut solo album Private Dancer—winning her three Grammys. Her other smash singles include "Better Be Good To Me,""The Best,""Private Dancer" and "What's Love Got to Do With It."

The documentary, directed by Dan Lindsay and T.J. Martin, will stream on HBO and HBO Max. "Angela Bassett, Oprah Winfrey, journalist Kurt Loder, playwright Katori Hall and Tina's husband Erwin Bach are among the interviews in the intimate documentary," reads the official website. "Simon Chinn, Jonathan Chinn, Diane Becker are producers for Lightbox. Erwin Bach, Tali Pelman, Will Clarke, Andy Mayson, Mike Runagall, David Gilbery and Charles Dorfman are executive producers."

Simultaneously, the oft-labeled Queen of Rock is nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame class of 2021:

Ike and Tina Turner were previously inducted as a joint act in 1991, and should she re-enter for her solo career in May, she will join rare company as female artists to earn the honor twice (h/t Rolling Stone's Andy Greene).
