Celebrity couples who have been together the longest

We often hear about swift celebrity romances, and we don’t just mean romances involving Taylor Swift. For decades the tabloids have been filled with tales of short-lived celebrity couples. Just think of all the times Elizabeth Taylor was married! However, some celebrity couples have been in it for the long haul. Here are some of the longest-married couples out there in Hollywood these days. Fingers crossed that doesn’t change anytime soon.

1 of 49

Samuel L. Jackson and LaTanya Richardson (1980)

Samuel L. Jackson and LaTanya Richardson (1980)

Jackson has been in approximately a million movies. That was even before he started playing Nick Fury in the Marvel movies. His wife hasn’t had as lengthy of a career, but she’s appeared in notable films like “Malcolm X” and “Sleepless in Seattle.” Through it all they’ve been married for almost 40 years amid hundreds of movies and TV shows.

2 of 49

Ringo Starr and Barbara Bach (1981)

Ringo Starr and Barbara Bach (1981)
Scott Dudelson/Getty Images

We’ve got a Beatle in this couple, so we don’t need to tell you anything more about Ringo. While his bandmate Paul McCartney has had a few marriages over the years, though he was married to his wife Linda for decades prior to her death, Starr has now been with Bach for nearly 40 years. While you may not think of Ringo as an actor, he’s surely happy he gave it a shot. Bach and Starr met on the set of the movie “Caveman,” which they both acted in.

Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne (1982)

Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne (1982)
Greg Doherty/Getty Images

Well, when a married couple has a reality show together, they become synonymous as a couple. For years Ozzy was the Osbourne we all knew of, thanks to his work in Black Sabbath. However, after “The Osbournes,” Sharon has built a career as a TV personality, including as a co-host on “The Talk.”

4 of 49

Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman (1982)

Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman (1982)
Walter McBride/Getty Images

There’s an asterisk here, but we wanted to include it. Technically DeVito and Perlman are separated. However, they have separated before and gotten back together. Through it all, they’ve never divorced, and both say they have no intention of divorcing during this current separation. Will the two sitcom stars of yesteryear rekindle the love? Even if not, given that they are still technically married and how long they were together, we still wanted to give them a place on this list.

5 of 49

Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn (1983)

Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn (1983)
Frazer Harrison/Getty Images

We have to put a disclaimer on this, as Russell and Hawn, two ‘80s movie stars, aren’t technically married. However, that’s only because Hawn, having already gone through two divorces, wasn’t in the mood to get hitched again. That hasn’t stopped these two from being together for over 35 years and also bringing actor Wyatt Russell into the world. (Goldie’s kids Oliver and Kate Hudson are from one of those previous marriages.)

6 of 49

Keith Richards and Patti Hansen (1983)

Keith Richards and Patti Hansen (1983)

We were just talking about a Beatle, so let’s talk about a member of the Rolling Stones as well. Apparently not every rock star is looking to jump from woman to woman (or man to man). Hansen married Richards on his 40th birthday. She’s primarily known as a model, but quite a successful one, who was once the face of a Calvin Klein campaign.

7 of 49

Christopher Guest and Jamie Lee Curtis (1984)

Christopher Guest and Jamie Lee Curtis (1984)
Greg Doherty/Getty Images

Despite the fact these two have been married for a long time, there will surely be some of you surprised to find out Guest and Curtis are hitched and have been for decades. Maybe it’s because Curtis has never appeared in any of Guest’s mockumentaries. They are both awesome, though, and it’s delightful to know they are together.

8 of 49

Brad Hall and Julia Louis-Dreyfus (1987)

Brad Hall and Julia Louis-Dreyfus (1987)
Lester Cohen/WireImage

You might think Louis-Dreyfus and Hall met while they were both cast members on “Saturday Night Live,” but actually they’ve known each other since college. Louis-Dreyfus has gone on to be one of the most beloved actresses in TV history, and “Veep” alone has given her more Emmys than anybody could dream of. Hall has been no slouch, though. In addition to acting, he created the TV show “Watching Ellie,” which starred his wife.

9 of 49

Mark Harmon and Pam Dawber (1987)

Mark Harmon and Pam Dawber (1987)
David Livingston/Getty Images

Harmon is a huge name to a certain kind of viewer. People make fun of “NCIS” and claim to know nobody under, say, 50 who watches it, but the fact is that it’s been on for hundreds of episodes, and Harmon has been the star of them all. Dawber is best known for being the titular Mindy in “Mork & Mindy.” The two are evidently private when it comes to their relationship, so let’s leave it at this.

10 of 49

Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson (1988)

Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson (1988)
Gregg DeGuire/Getty Images

Hanks is a beloved icon with two Oscars to his name. He was also married previously to his relationship with Wilson, which is when he had his son Colin. The second time was a charm for Hanks, who first met his future wife on the set of his sitcom “Bosom Buddies.” These two actors have been together for over 30 years now, and recently helped us realize how serious COVID-19 is when they both were diagnosed with the disease.

11 of 49

Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick (1988)

Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick (1988)

Bacon has been famous for so long that he was already well-known before he and Sedgwick tied the knot. “Footloose” came out in 1984, after all. Sedgwick was not famous yet but eventually would get her own procedural, “The Closer,” that eventually made her a known name.

12 of 49

Michael J. Fox and Tracy Pollan (1988)

Michael J. Fox and Tracy Pollan (1988)
Bruce Glikas/Bruce Glikas/FilmMagic

Talk about life imitating art. Pollan and Fox first met when she was brought in to play the girlfriend of Fox’s Alex P. Keaton character on “Family Ties.” They crossed paths again when making the film “Bright Lights, Big City,” and this time it took. While Pollan has mostly acted on TV, including TV movies, Fox is Marty McFly and, therefore, a legend.

13 of 49

Kevin Kline and Phoebe Cates (1989)

Kevin Kline and Phoebe Cates (1989)
Jenny Anderson/Getty Images for Tony Awards Productions

Cates has pretty much retired from acting, though she made a big impact in the ‘80s with the one-two punch of “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” and “Gremlins.” Kline is also pretty selective but he’s still working, and he also has an Oscar for his work in “A Fish Called Wanda.” They are both talented actors, and their daughter is a talented musician. You may know Greta Kline better from her stage name of Frankie Cosmos.

14 of 49

John Travolta and Kelly Preston (1991)

John Travolta and Kelly Preston (1991)
Pascal Le Segretain/Getty Images

Travolta was a huge star for many years, and he’s still acting to this day, even if he isn’t a huge draw anymore. Maybe he needs another “Pulp Fiction”-style career revamp. If not, he’s had a good run. Preston has acted in several TV and film productions. Both were in “Battlefield Earth.” Any relationship that can withstand that is impressive. Sadly, Preston passed away in 2020, but since she was alive when we originally created this article we will keep this slide here in honor of their successful marriage.

15 of 49

Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw (1991)

Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw (1991)
Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic

Spielberg, one of the biggest directors in the world, met Capshaw when she co-starred in his film “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.” They didn’t get married for several more years, but that was the spark that eventually led to a successful, lengthy relationship. “Temple of Doom” is not a standout on Spielberg’s filmography, but it is definitely Capshaw’s biggest role.

16 of 49

Sting and Trudie Styler (1992)

Sting and Trudie Styler (1992)
Dia Dipasupil/Getty Images for Tribeca Film Festival

Since Sting goes by only one name, it would have been hard for his wife, Trudie, to take his last name. We know his real name is Gordon Sumner, but let’s just stick to the joke. Styler has done a bit of acting but is also a successful producer. These two also have a daughter, Mickey, who is an actress.

17 of 49

Bruce Springsteen and Patti Scialfa (1992)

Bruce Springsteen and Patti Scialfa (1992)
Brian Ach/Getty Images for Bob Woodruff Foundation

Granted, Scialfa is only famous because she’s in Bruce Springsteen’s backing group, the E Street Band. And she’s also probably only in the band because The Boss took a shine to her. That being said, she’s been playing with his band for decades now, and given how beloved Bruce is to his fans, and how long his concerts are, people have seen these two together for a while.

18 of 49

Warren Beatty and Annette Bening (1992)

Warren Beatty and Annette Bening (1992)
Bruce Glikas/WireImage

For many years Beatty had a reputation as a Hollywood ladies man. Some still say that Carly Simon’s song “You’re So Vain” is at least in part about him. Then, in his 50s, he married Bening, and they’ve been together ever since. Apparently he finally met the woman he wanted to settle down with, and she happened to be an actor of immense talent in her own right.

19 of 49

David E. Kelley and Michelle Pfeiffer (1993)

David E. Kelley and Michelle Pfeiffer (1993)

Kelley is the rare writer who counts as a celebrity. He’s created and run many a popular TV show. We’re talking the likes of “Ally McBeal,” “Boston Legal” and recently, “Big Little Lies.” We’ve seen Pfeiffer plenty on the screen, though. Right before she married Kelley, she played Catwoman in “Batman Returns.”

20 of 49

Harry Connick Jr. and Jill Goodacre (1994)

Harry Connick Jr. and Jill Goodacre (1994)
Matt Winkelmeyer/MG18/Getty Images for The Met Museum/Vogue

Not all models become household names, but when you are the face of Victoria’s Secret for years, you tend to get noticed. Goodacre was famous enough to play herself in an episode of “Friends,” and she was already married to Connick at that time. Connick has bounced between music and acting over the years, earning him both an Emmy and a Grammy.

21 of 49

Steve and Nancy Carell (1995)

Steve and Nancy Carell (1995)
Albert L. Ortega/Getty Images

For  a lot of years, Nancy still performed under her maiden name, Nancy Walls. You may have seen her on “The Daily Show” back in the day. Of course her husband, Steve, who was her teacher back at The Second City, used “The Daily Show” to help springboard himself into both TV (“The Office”) and film (“The 40-Year-Old Virgin”) stardom.

22 of 49

Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen (1995)

Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen (1995)
Paul Archuleta/FilmMagic

Here are a couple of beloved actors who also make a charming couple. Danson became a TV legend playing Sam Malone on “Cheers.” Steenburgen has an Oscar. Both have starred in sitcoms recently, and they’ve also both played themselves on “Curb Your Enthusiasm" and cameoed together in the recent "30 Rock" special.

23 of 49

Mark Consuelos and Kelly Ripa (1996)

Mark Consuelos and Kelly Ripa (1996)
Dia Dipasupil/Getty Images

Prior to becoming a daytime mainstay, Ripa was an actress, including a stint on the soap “All My Children.” You know who also acted on that show? Consuelos, who was part of the cast for many years and can be seen on “Riverdale” now.

24 of 49

Tim McGraw and Faith Hill (1996)

Tim McGraw and Faith Hill (1996)

If you’re into country music, you know there may not be a bigger power couple out there. McGraw and Hill are legends of that genre. They’ve both been so successful even people who aren’t into country have heard of them both.

25 of 49

Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker (1997)

Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker (1997)
Gilbert Carrasquillo/FilmMagic

Both Broderick and Parker have been acting since they were teenagers, although Parker’s greatest fame came as the star of “Sex and the City.” Broderick has never reached greater fame than in his role as Ferris Bueller, but he’s had a fine career well into adulthood. Parker starred in the HBO show "Divorce" recently, which we hope isn't foreshadowing.

26 of 49

Will and Jada Pinkett Smith (1997)

Will and Jada Pinkett Smith (1997)
David Livingston/Getty Images

Smith was perhaps the biggest movie star of the ‘90s, at least in the middle of the decade. These days, he seems to coast on the goodwill he garnered from being Will Smith. His wife, Jada, has had an acting career in her own right and also briefly fronted a heavy metal band. Their children, Jaden and Willow, are also known to some degree.

27 of 49

Courtney B. Vance and Angela Bassett (1997)

Courtney B. Vance and Angela Bassett (1997)
Dia Dipasupil/Getty Images

Bassett starred as Tina Turner in “What’s Love Got to Do With It?” Apparently, it has a lot to do with her marriage to Vance. They’ve both won Emmys, with Vance probably most remembered for his Emmy-winning role as Johnnie Cochran in "The People vs. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story." In his speech he had a lot of nice words for his wife.

28 of 49

Judd Apatow and Leslie Mann (1997)

Judd Apatow and Leslie Mann (1997)
Jon Kopaloff/WireImage

Judd loves to get his family into his films, and he seems to love to cast his wife in his movies, such as “This is 40.” Lucky for us, Mann is a talented, funny actress. That’s why she’s gotten plenty of work in stuff that her husband hasn’t directed.

29 of 49

William H. Macy and Felicity Huffman (1997)

William H. Macy and Felicity Huffman (1997)
Tommaso Boddi/Getty Images for Netflix

This marriage has been in the news recently for the wrong reasons. Huffman was one of the people indicted in the college admissions sting. Before that, if you heard about these two it’s probably because Stephen Colbert enjoyed using them for the joke couple name of “Filliam H. Muffman.”

30 of 49

David and Victoria Beckham (1999)

David and Victoria Beckham (1999)

Beckham was arguably the most famous soccer player in the world for a while. He even got people to pay attention to the MLS. And yet he will never be as famous as his wife was in her prime. You may remember Victoria Beckham better as Posh Spice of the Spice Girls.

31 of 49

Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones (2000)

Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones (2000)
Tommaso Boddi/Getty Images for Netflix

Long marriages must run in Douglas’ family. His father, Kirk, married to Anne Buydens in 1954 and they were married until his death in 2020. It will take a while before these two Oscar winners can match that longevity. Of course, the fact Kirk lived to the incredible age of 103 helped on that front. We’ll see if the star of “Wall Street” can pull that off.

32 of 49

Clark Gregg and Jennifer Grey (2001)

Clark Gregg and Jennifer Grey (2001)
Jayne Kamin-Oncea/Getty Images

Gregg was a working actor for many years before he got the seemingly small role of Agent Phil Coulson in the Marvel universe. The next thing any of us knew, he was a key cog in the MCU. As such, it seems it's under the radar that Gregg and Grey are married. She played Baby in “Dirty Dancing!” There should be more love for this couple.

33 of 49

Freddie Prinze Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar (2002)

Freddie Prinze Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar (2002)
Michael Loccisano/FilmMagic

Prinze and Gellar were both big names among teenagers in the late ‘90s and early 2000s. They may have seemed like the kind of couple who would have been short-lived, but they are still together over a decade later. Plus, they played Fred and Daphne, a true power couple, in those “Scooby-Doo” movies.

34 of 49

Nomar Garciaparra and Mia Hamm (2003)

Nomar Garciaparra and Mia Hamm (2003)
Tullio M. Puglia/Getty Images for Golden Foot

We’ve got two athletes here for you. Nomar was a star for the Red Sox back in the day. You may remember him getting name-dropped in all those old “Saturday Night Live” sketches. Hamm was the face of women’s soccer in this country during her heyday, and she may still be the best women’s soccer player the United States has ever produced.

35 of 49

Alexis Denisof and Alyson Hannigan (2003)

Alexis Denisof and Alyson Hannigan (2003)
Michael Tran/FilmMagic

No, Hannigan didn’t marry her “American Pie” costar, Jason Biggs, in real life. That only happened in “American Wedding,” the third movie in that series. You may also remember Hannigan from “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” which is where she met Denisof. He had a small role in that show, but it led to a regular role on the “Buffy” spinoff, “Angel.”

36 of 49

Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally (2003)

Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally (2003)
Theo Wargo/Getty Images

Offerman and Mullally are clearly over the moon for each other. They talk about one another all the time; they do shows together. They are also not at all shy about their, shall we say, love life. Offerman and Mullally are now sitcom legends, thanks to their roles in “Parks and Recreation” and “Will & Grace,” respectively. Mullally also played one of Offerman’s ex-wives named Tammy on “Parks and Rec.” We can only assume their actual marriage is less tempestuous.

37 of 49

Peter Hermann and Mariska Hargitay (2004)

Peter Hermann and Mariska Hargitay (2004)
Tony Barson/FilmMagic

Hargitay has been starring on “Law & Order: SVU” seemingly since the dawn of the universe. You know who else has been on that show? Her husband, Hermann, who has appeared in 32 episodes of “SVU.” He’s done plenty of other acting outside of that, though. He’s been in a few films and is a regular on the show “Younger.”

38 of 49

Ben Falcone and Melissa McCarthy (2005)

Ben Falcone and Melissa McCarthy (2005)
MARK RALSTON/AFP/Getty Images

McCarthy was a working actress for many years, then suddenly she exploded into fame. She got her own sitcom, “Mike and Molly,” and then stole the show in “Bridesmaids.” That took her from supporting character to straight-up movie star. Through the rise she’s been with Falcone, who has appeared in many of McCarthy’s movies and has directed and written a few of her outings. That being said, he’s been acting since 2001, so he has a career in his own right outside of his (admittedly extremely talented) wife.

39 of 49

Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood (2005)

Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood (2005)
Tony Barson/WireImage

While Garth and Trisha haven’t been together as long as Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, they are also country music legends. Brooks was a big enough star to even cross over into the mainstream. In addition to her music career, Yearwood has had a cooking show on Food Network for several years.

40 of 49

Adam Horovitz and Kathleen Hanna (2006)

Adam Horovitz and Kathleen Hanna (2006)
Mike Coppola/Getty Images for Little Kids Rock

You probably know Horovitz better as Ad-Rock from the Beastie Boys. Hanna was one of the progenitors of the riot grrrl movement, leading bands such as Bikini Kill and Le Tigre. Back in the day, it would have seemed odd for these two to get together, but eventually they found each other and apparently it has been going just fine for them.

41 of 49

Charlie Day and Mary Elizabeth Ellis (2006)

Charlie Day and Mary Elizabeth Ellis (2006)
Alberto E. Rodriguez/Getty Images

On “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” the Waitress, played by Ellis, is disgusted by Charlie and spent years rejecting his advances. There’s some built-in irony there, given that Day and Ellis are married and have been together since the first days of the show. While they will always be tied together as Charlie and the Waitress, they both have had notable careers outside the cult comedy show.

42 of 49

Ellen DeGeneres and Portia De Rossi (2008)

Ellen DeGeneres and Portia De Rossi (2008)
C Flanigan/Getty Images

There aren’t any other same-sex couples on this list, owing largely to the fact such marriages were not legal for many years. Additionally, even opening the door up to same-sex couples who have been together for many years without being married did not yield many featuring two celebrities. You can’t argue with the inclusion of Ellen and Portia, though. De Rossi was great on “Arrested Development,” and Ellen has been arguably the face of daytime talk for years.

43 of 49

Jay Z and Beyonce (2008)

Jay Z and Beyonce (2008)
Kevin Mazur/Getty Images for Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100

What more can we say about these two? You know who they are. You know a lot about their relationship. There’s a good chance you’ve listened to “Lemonade.” Bey and Jay are a ubiquitous couple. Even one of their kids, Blue Ivy, is kind of famous.

44 of 49

Rob McElhenney and Kaitlin Olson (2008)

Rob McElhenney and Kaitlin Olson (2008)
Matthew Simmons/FilmMagic

Yep, we’ve got two “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” couples. When McElhenney and crew shot the first “Always Sunny” pilot, the character of Dee was played by Rob’s then girlfriend. As such, when he and Olson, who replaced McElhenney’s now ex as Dee, the two were hesitant to tell their castmates they had gotten together. Now that they, and the show, have been going strong for over a decade, everybody is probably cool with it.

45 of 49

Peter Sarsgaard and Maggie Gyllenhaal (2009)

Peter Sarsgaard and Maggie Gyllenhaal (2009)
Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic

Maggie’s brother, Jake, has had some high-profile romances, but the acclaimed actress has been married to her fellow actor Sarsgaard for a decade. He’s not a household name, he’s not Stellen Skaarsgard of Alexander Skarsgard, but he’s been in many well-received films — also that TV show “The Slap” people made fun of.

46 of 49

Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen (2009)

Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen (2009)
Kevin Winter/Getty Images

Is Gisele the Tom Brady of modeling, or is Brady the Gisele Bundchen of football? They are both immensely successful and have been at the top of their chosen fields. Brady has won Super Bowl after Super Bowl with the New England Patriots. Gisele is maybe still the most famous model in the world. They’ve both been in the public eye so much, it seems like they’ve been married for longer than a decade.

Hugh Dancy and Claire Danes (2009)

You may not remember the 2007 movie “Evening,” but Dancy and Danes surely do. It’s where they met and started their relationship. Only a couple of years later they were married. “Evening” didn’t even make back its budget of $30 million, but these are two actors who probably don’t care.

Two Oscar winners in one couple! These two Spaniards began dating in 2007, right around the time they starred in "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" together, the film that got Cruz her Oscar. Lucky for Cruz, she wasn't with Bardem while he was making "No Country For Old Men." She didn't have to deal with that hairdo.

Harrison Ford and Calista Flockhart (2010)

Harrison Ford and Calista Flockhart (2010)
FilmMagic/FilmMagic

Who says the Golden Globes are a waste of time? Ford, who has played a couple of characters you've heard of in Indiana Jones and Han Solo, doesn't seem like the kind of guy who likes going to award shows. But he went to the 2002 Golden Globes, and there he met Flockhart, best known for starring in "Ally McBeal." They hit it off, started dating and several years later finally tied the knot.
