“The Farewell”

“The Farewell”

While the Oscars didn’t give “The Farewell” any love, the Golden Globes did. It was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film, and Awkwafina took home Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy. The movie isn’t terribly funny, but it is really good. “The Farewell” tells the story of a family gathering in China to say their goodbyes to a dying elderly relative, without letting her know she’s dying, that is. Watch it now on Amazon Prime.

“Spider-Man: Far From Home”

“Spider-Man: Far From Home”

Technically, “Spider-Man: Far From Home” and not “Avengers: Endgame,” is the end of the first era of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s a delightful, funny action movie that deals with the fallout of “Endgame.” Jake Gyllenhaal is excellent as…well, we’ll let you find out for yourself if you aren’t aware. You can stream the movie with the Starz app.

“Rocketman”

“Rocketman”

Hot take: “Rocketman” is better than “Bohemian Rhapsody.” That’s not just because Taron Egerton does more actual singing as Elton John than Rami Malek did as Freddie Mercury. “Rocketman” is also a little less by the numbers. If you like Elton John’s music, then check out “Rocketman,” streaming on Epix.

“John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum”

“John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum”

Looking for a crazy action movie? Look no further than the third chapter in the “John Wick” series. Keanu Reeves is back and as violent as ever. If you liked the first two movies in this series, of course you want to watch the third one. If you haven’t seen the first two, well, there’s not a lot to explain. You can probably jump in. Watch it now on HBO.

“Booksmart”

“Booksmart”

A lot of people missed this one in the theaters despite critical acclaim, but now is the perfect time to amend that. Want to watch a couple of high school friends have a wacky night of adventure? Then check out “Booksmart,” even if it isn’t the distaff “Superbad” it has been pitched as. Find it on Hulu.

“Toy Story 4”

“Toy Story 4”

Due to the ongoing situation, Disney has added a couple of its newest movies to Disney+ quicker than it initially planned. One of those is the fourth movie in the “Toy Story” series. Another is “Frozen 2.” Of those two films, the one we want to recommend is definitely the latest adventure of Woody and Buzz.

“Us”

“Us”

Maybe you aren’t in the frame of mind for a horror movie, or maybe you are in the perfect frame of mind. It depends on who you are as a person. “Us” wasn’t as well-received as Jordan Peele’s debut film, “Get Out,” but it has a great performance from Lupita N’yongo and plenty of spooky stuff. Give it a watch on HBO.

“The Last Black Man in San Francisco”

“The Last Black Man in San Francisco”

If you don't normally sees smaller independent movies, this could be your chance to change that. One of the best reviewed, but least seen, films of 2019 was “The Last Black Man in San Francisco.” It might be a change for you, but you could also really enjoy it. You can check it out on Amazon Prime.

“Alita: Battle Angel”

“Alita: Battle Angel”

This is pretty much a polar opposite recommendation to “The Last Black Man in San Francisco.” Are you a film buff who usually steers clear of big, dumb movies. Well a lot of people find “Alita: Battle Angel” quite fun for a big, dumb action film. You may need to turn your mind off, and if the anime eyes aren’t for you, we get it. But this may be the time for some silly fun.

“The Irishman”

“The Irishman”

Hey, if you were ever going to have time for a three-hour movie, Martin Scorsese’s film is worth it. Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci all give excellent performances, and while the movie may not have won at the Oscars, it earned a ton of nominations. It’s a ruminative film, but gripping and worthwhile. It’s a Netflix original, so you know where to find it.

“Detective Pikachu”

“Detective Pikachu”

“Detective Pikachu” is better than it had any right to be. Is it a great movie? No, but it is a fun romp. Ryan Reynolds does his thing voicing Pikachu. The special effects are solid, and the world building is fun to look at. Give it a watch on HBO, maybe with the family.

“Long Shot”

“Long Shot”

Raunchy but mature romantic comedies are rare. “Long Shot” is here for the audience looking to have that particular itch scratched. Seth Rogen is in it, so you know he’s a goofy stoner, but the movie operates on a, ahem, higher plane than you might be thinking. Maybe that’s because the female lead is Charlize Theron. “Long Shot” is on HBO.

“Serenity”

“Serenity”

OK, hear us out. Don’t watch “Serenity” if you want to see a good movie. Do watch it if you want to see a bonkers, ridiculous, so-bad-it’s-good movie. “Serenity” is completely insane. If you want to laugh, then watch “Serenity” on Amazon Prime.

“Where’d You Go, Bernadette?”

“Where’d You Go, Bernadette?”

Did this movie work entirely? Perhaps not, even though it’s based on a very good, very popular book. However, “Where’d You Go, Bernadette?” by Maria Semple tells the story through letters and emails and all sorts of found material. You can’t do that with a moment. What you can do, though, is cast Cate Blanchett to star in your movie and hire Richard Linklater to direct it. That’s good enough to make it interesting. Give it a chance on Hulu.

“Avengers: Endgame”

“Avengers: Endgame”

We mentioned it earlier, but we’re ending with the biggest movie in the history of time. Have you seen “Avengers: Endgame?” The odds are you have. Why not watch it again? It’s the biggest movie event of our lives. Plus, if you’re paying for Disney+, you need something to watch on it, right? At least, after you’ve finished “The Mandalorian.” Why not rewatch “Endgame?”
