10 shows that should come to an end after this season

This upcoming television season — and the series’ 12th season altogether —"The Big Bang Theory" is officially heading toward its final “Bazinga.” Twelve seasons is more than just a “good run,” and with the amount of money the cast is making, it’s even more impressive that any of them were willing to walk away from it at all. (Thank God for syndication money, though, right?) Now — if only more shows could bow out when the time is right.

A television show being “maybe” too long in the tooth doesn’t necessarily have to be the only criteria for shutting it down. It would be easy to say "Supernatural" should finally wrap it up. But at this point, it’s kind of impressive to see just how far it goes and where things will land when it finally does end. Right?

OK, let’s just entertain for a moment the idea of pulling the plug on "Supernatural." It would literally be the end of at least two or three eras. But it will basically last until Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki get tired of it. And it’s not like it’ll be taking up space, as The CW is actually making room in its schedule elsewhere, with "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend," "Jane the Virgin," and "iZombie" all ending this season. But just imagine a world where "Supernatural" ends. It could definitely do it.

Speaking of the end of an era, with "TBBT" ending, it feels like the other show that had a stranglehold on the Emmys deserves a look toward the end. In May 2017, the series was renewed by ABC for both a ninth (this fall) and 10th season, with the 10th season "maybe" being the final one. It's fine for "Modern Family" to make it through both of these promised seasons, but maybe it should keep the promise of calling it a day at 10.

"Arrow"

Even before Stephen Amell confirmed he’s currently signed through this upcoming seventh season, the steps were definitely in motion to make it the final one. First, there’s the general juggling act of cool (but sometimes frustrating) Green Arrow stuff and uncool (always frustrating) "Oliver's a dad" stuff. Secondly, it would be the ultimate power move to end with this season because it would officially confirm — more or less — that this entire series was all just one long con to finally get "Green Arrow: Escape From Supermax" from the page to the screen.

This upcoming season is Emmy Rossum's last season as a series regular. Emmy Rossum is the show. That settles it.

Technically, this depends on the development track for the upcoming "Family Guy" feature film and when that will come out because it would probably make for the perfect out for the series. But why exactly does "Family Guy" need an out? Really think about it: Is "Family Guy" even really a part of the pop cultural conversation anymore? And in terms of jokes about "Family Guy," are those even as prominent as they were maybe five years ago?

Really, "13 Reasons Why's" character issues could be solved if they just listened to one thing from "Heathers" (the movie, of course): "Teenage Suicide (Don’t Do It)." But seriously, despite its short existence, "13 Reason Why's" existence has led more to talking about why "13 Reasons Why" even exists at all than the content of the show itself.

"Designated Survivor"

Nothing against "Designated Survivor," but it's the sacrificial lamb — thanks to its Netflix zombie renewal so late in the game — for this moment in 2018 television when, all of a sudden, shows are just getting renewed and brought back from the sometimes necessary dead. Where was this Netflix and Amazon sympathy when "Happy Endings" got canceled, huh?

Honestly, this show should’ve been canceled the moment Amanda Brown was robbed in Season 3. But since it’s been a ratings hit for NBC — you know the network would air it every night of the week if it could — justice has yet to be served. But really, how has "The Voice" been able to last so long with a weaker track record for making major music stars than "American Idol?" The coaches’ banter isn’t that good.

After losing showrunner Frank Spotnitz — and then making it through the second season without a showrunner at all — one hopes the third season of "Man in the High Castle" will bounce back to something more than decent. If not, just pull the plug.

"New Amsterdam"

This hasn’t even premiered but…did they not think to Google the series? There was already a failed one-season show from 10 years ago called "New Amsterdam" (starring Nikolaj Coster-Waldau). This is not like naming a show "Doubt" or "Deception," which are extremely generic words anyone could use more than once. The series was originally titled "Bellevue" (the hospital it’s based on), so there were options. Really, the show can stay, but the title should come to an end because Freema Agyeman and Janet Montgomery deserve a win.
