Remembering just how good Jameis Winston was for Florida State

Jameis Winston has become somewhat of an afterthought as an NFL quarterback. He's a solid backup and at this point, a veteran, but in no way has his NFL career lived up to his billing as the No. 1 pick of the 2015 draft.

For that reason, it's easy to forget just how good of a college quarterback Winston was during his two seasons at Florida State.

For those who remember, though, it's no surprise to hear that the Seminoles are going to be retiring Winston's jersey this Saturday when FSU takes on North Alabama.

"The retirement of Jameis' jersey will certainly be a great event on our campus," Florida State University vice president and director of athletics Michael Alford said in the press release. "He had a huge impact on Florida State football, and his place as one of our all-time greats is unquestioned. I know we all look forward to seeing his No. 5 becoming a permanent part of Doak Campbell Stadium."

So how good was Winston? He was silly good for the 'Noles.

He was a freshman when he led Florida State to a 14-0 record with a win in the 2013 National Championship over Auburn in the Rose Bowl. That was his Heisman Trophy-winning season, a campaign that saw him throw for 4,057 yards and 40 touchdowns (10 interceptions) while also rushing for 219 yards and four touchdowns on the ground.

To put his athleticism in perspective, Winston also played baseball for FSU as a pitcher and outfielder. He was FSU's closer in 2014 and notched seven saves with 31 strikeouts and a WHIP of 0.750 in 33.1 innings pitched.

In just two seasons at FSU, he passed for more than 7,900 yards and notched 65 touchdowns with a 26-1 record as a starter. His only loss as quarterback for the Seminoles came in the inaugural College Football Playoff semifinal, where FSU lost to the Oregon Ducks.

As mentioned, Winston was drafted No. 1 overall by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2015.
