Ohio State Head Coach Ryan Day Gets Brutally Honest About Giving Up Playcalling Duties
Adam Cairns/Columbus Dispatch / USA TODAY NETWORK

Ohio State head coach Ryan Day has been making the news a lot lately. He has been on a recruiting hot streak, gaining many of the nation’s top players. One under-the-radar news story is that Day was going to be giving up playcalling duties. While Bill O’Brien may be moving on, Day is still committed to giving up calling the plays. He got brutally honest about it in a recent interview.

Ohio State Coach Ryan Day On Playcalling Duties

Day doesn’t want to give it up, but he knows it is the right thing to do. “I know that it has to happen. … Do I want to? No. I don’t. … I know that my energy and time and all that stuff needs to be in other areas,” Day said in a recent interview. Being a head coach of a college football program means wearing many hats. Not only is there a team to coach, but NIL has made it so they have to be general managers and fundraisers. Day wants to focus on making sure the talent keeps coming to Columbus.

A Good Move By Day

It was time for a change in the playcalling department. Despite the offensive weapons at his disposal, Day has lost three straight games to Michigan and failed to bring home a Big Ten Championship in recent years. His 56-8 record is great, but he struggles against the top competition. Sometimes, a change is necessary. Who will be calling the plays? At this point, we don’t know, as O’Brien may be leaving. Regardless, Day seems set on giving it up.

Can Ohio State rebound in 2024? They will need to; otherwise, Day could find himself on the hot seat.
