How Many Wins Can WVU Reach? Phil Steele Provides His Thoughts
USA TODAY Sports

The West Virginia Mountaineers have taken the college football world by storm with a 4-1 (2-0) start that very few saw coming.

WVU's only loss is to one of the top five or so teams in the country in Penn State and have had to rely on the services of backup redshirt freshman quarterback Nicco Marchiol in two of their four victories. And then you have last Saturday's win over TCU which, in my opinion, is the most impressive one yet.

Marchiol was slated to start again as Greene continued to work his way back from an ankle injury but at the end of Wednesday's practice, Marchiol rolled his ankle and Neal Brown had to pivot and go back to Greene with a different gameplan. Along the way, two Mountaineer defensive starters were carted off the field and you could argue, two of the best three players on that side of the ball - Aubrey Burks and Trey Lathan.

Despite the odds being stacked against them, they found a way once again to come out on top.

On this morning's episode of In the Gun, Phil Steele joined Jed Drenning and myself to preview this week's college football slate. We also asked his opinion on the Mountaineers and how he sees them finishing down the stretch.

"I do think they beat Houston. They should be favored against Oklahoma State at home, so those are two they should be favored against. BYU at home, Cincinnati. At UCF is going to be tough. The Bounce House is always one of the tougher venues out there. They play their best ball there. I think they'll be an underdog there. They'll be an underdog at Oklahoma. And IF the switch is turned for Baylor and Dave Aranda has this team playing like I think he can the second half of the year, they'd be an underdog at Baylor. That would be eight wins, but then again, I didn't expect them to beat TCU. I thought they'd play TCU very tight last week. I didn't expect them to win the game outright, they did. I think nine is a possibility this year. Right now, I'd put their total at about eight."
