Commissioner Saban? Legendary coach not done impacting college football

For the better part of the past two decades, Nick Saban was the face of college football. Just because he retired in January doesn't mean that's about to change.

In an interview with ESPN's Chris Low, Saban revealed his plans post-retirement, which include using his voice and platform to produce "meaningful change" to college football.

"I want to help any way I can, because I love the players, and I love college football," said Saban before adding, "What we have now is not college football - not college football as we know it. You hear somebody use the word 'student-athlete.' That doesn't exist."

In Low's article, he notes, "Some coaches have suggested that Saban would be a perfect choice as college football commissioner if such a position is ever created."

Saban, who was hired by ESPN as an analyst for college football and the NFL Draft after retiring from coaching, said he's "not really looking for a job," but he'd also "like to impact college football the best way I can, whether it's being a spokesperson or anything else."

He expressed concern about the influence NIL collectives have on the sport, which has largely morphed into a pay-for-play operation.

Saban echoed an idea floated by NCAA president Charlie Baker in December 2023 that suggested NIL money be funneled through universities as opposed to outside groups.

"People can give money to the university again and get a tax deduction for doing it, and the university in some kind of way shares, where it's share revenue, whether it's buying marketing rights, which is a possibility," said Saban.

The seven-time national championship-winning coach spent the majority of his professional career in college football, so he knows a thing or two about the sport. As it continues to evolve, the decision-makers would be wise to listen when Saban speaks.
