College football Week 7: Players to watch

There are some truly great matchups this week. Georgia at LSU. Wisconsin at Michigan. Washington at Oregon. Even games like Missouri at Alabama, UCF at Memphis and Colorado at USC are fun contests to check out. In big games there are big-time players.

We all know how the Heisman race is going right now (we'll touch on that in a bit), but there are a bunch of players who are under the radar and doing some nice things. This week there are some great opportunities for those players to get some shine, as they finally get to perform on the big stage.

Here are 15 players to watch this week in college football.

Jordan Cronkrite, South Florida

The Bulls find themselves ranked and on national television on Friday night. Expect a steady dose of Jordan Cronkrite against Tulsa after his breakout game last week. Cronkrite ran for 302 yards and three touchdowns against UMass. That output matched his total over two seasons at Florida. The transfer is enjoying his role as USF's main back and he's bringing them wins..

Dwayne Haskins, Ohio State

Haskins hasn't eased into the starting quarterback job at Ohio State -- he's taken it over. Last week against Indiana, he threw for 455 yards and 6 touchdowns against Indiana. This week he will get to face Minnesota which he should be able to light up.

Darrell Henderson, Memphis

When Memphis hosts UCF in a pivotal AAC matchup, most will go in knowing about McKenzie Milton and the UCF Knights winning streak. But Memphis will be bringing in the nation's top rusher, Henderson, who has ran for 934 yards and 12 TDs this year. He's done so with huge plays, shown by his astonishing 11.8 yards per carry. He knows there will be a national audience watching this game so expect some fireworks by Henderson at the Liberty Bowl.

Justin Herbert, Oregon

The last time the Ducks played a huge Pac-12 North game, Hebert played outstanding in the overtime loss to Stanford. Now Washington comes calling in a must-win if the Ducks want to win a conference title. Hebert has thrown for 1,411 yards and 15 TDs this year and would love nothing more than to finally beat the Huskies. The last two years have seen UW beat Oregon by a combined score of 108-24.

Lil'Jordan Humphrey, Texas

Humphrey was everywhere for the Longhorns in the Red River Rivalry win over Oklahoma last week. He caught nine passes for 133 yards and a touchdown and completed two passes with one of them for a touchdown last week and is in the top 20 nationally in receiving yards. Texas is in the top ten in the rankings and face in-state rival Baylor.

Vosean Joseph, Florida

The Gators have been winning with defense of late and Joseph has been at the forefront. Against LSU last week, he recorded 14 tackles including two sacks and 3.5 tackles for loss. He's Florida's leading tackler and been a big part of surging back up the rankings. The Gators head to Vanderbilt this week.

Drew Lock, Missouri

Look, not too many people believe that Missouri will go into Tuscaloosa and beat Alabama. But the Tigers' quarterback has been one of the sleepers for a couple of years and will be on a big stage to finally have eyes on him. He led the SEC in passing last year and he's among the conference leaders this year. A great test for a very good QB.

Trace McSorley, Penn State

Penn State has a big game against Michigan State this week and the Nittany Lions have been tasting that loss to Ohio State for two weeks. McSorely who played well in the loss to the Buckeyes, wants to get them back on track. He's thrown for 1,049 yards and 10 TDs (just two interceptions) and wants to avenge last year's loss to the Spartans where he threw for 381 yards but also threw three picks.

McKenzie Milton, UCF

Milton can keep the Knights in the top ten with a big AAC game against Memphis this weekend. Milton has thrown for 1,501 yards and 15 touchdowns this year (only four interceptions) and adding five rushing touchdowns. Milton wants to get UCF back into the discussion for a national championship.

Steven Montez, Colorado

Montez has been busy setting Colorado passing records and in doing so has the Buffaloes as the class of the Pac-12 South. Montez has thrown for over 1,400 yards and 11 TDs this season (he's added three running scores) and has already stuffed UCLA and Arizona State. Winning at USC this week would go a long way in getting back to the Pac-12 title game.

Shea Patterson, Michigan

The Wolverines have a huge games against Wisconsin in Ann Arbor. With a loss to Notre Dame already and with Penn State and Ohio State looming, Michigan cannot afford a loss here. Patterson has been heating up for Michigan at the right time (282 yards, 3 TDs last week vs Maryland) and has already thrown for more touchdown passes this season (10) than all the Wolverines' quarterbacks combined last year.

N'Kosi Perry, Miami

Things have been going Miami's way since Perry has been named the starter. Last week, he led a huge comeback to beat Florida State by tossing four touchdowns, including three in the last 20 minutes of the game when the 'Canes trailed, 27-7. Miami heads to Virginia to go up against a tough Cavaliers defense and Perry will be leaned on to keep his nice freshman season going.

JD Spielman, Nebraska

JD Spielman, Nebraska

The Cornhuskers have been terrible this year, but Spielman has been a diamond in the rough. Last week against Wisconsin, he caught nine passes for 209 yards and a touchdown in yet another loss. This week they will be on national television at Northwestern and if the Huskers want to finally get a win, Spielman will be a big part of it. He is the son of Minnesota Vikings GM Rick Spielman.

14 of 15

Jonathan Taylor, Wisconsin

Jonathan Taylor, Wisconsin
Jeffrey Becker-USA TODAY Sports

Taylor is doing what we all though he'd be doing. He's third in the nation in rushing and after not finding the endzone in two games hit pay-dirt three times against Nebraska last week. Just in time as the Badgers head to Michigan for a huge Big Ten game against a very solid defense. Taylor could vault back up the Heisman race with a big game here.

15 of 15

Tua Tagovailoa, Alabama

Tua Tagovailoa, Alabama
Marvin Gentry-USA TODAY Sports

The leader for the Heisman as we near the midpoint of the regular season. Tagovailoa has been sensational this season and he barely throws the ball in the second half. Tua doesn't need to as 'Bama has the top scoring first half offense in the nation. He has thrown for just under 1,500 yards and has 18 touchdowns to no interceptions. He's only thrown 101 passes all year long (14.8 yards per average).
