The University of Wisconsin basketball program will heavily rely on the transfer portal market to find a replacement for Tyler Wahl.
Per the Portal Report, the Badgers are among the few high-major programs expressing interest in Southern Illinois transfer Troy D’Amico. Other schools in the mix include Rutgers, Belmont, Liberty, Richmond, Wyoming, and several other mid-majors.
D’Amico, a Chicago native, stands at 6-foot-7 and 210 pounds. He had a nice junior season for the Salukis, averaging 9.3 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 2.6 assists while connecting on 36.4% of his 3-point attempts.
The latest Wisconsin basketball transfer portal target has 94 games worth of experience and has one season of eligibility remaining.
With Wisconsin basketball set to graduate long-time contributor Tyler Wahl at the end of the season, the Badgers are going to be aggressive in the transfer portal in search of a replacement.
Troy D’Amico from Southern Illinois is a less high-profile transfer target, but his skill set fits the Badgers’ offense well in many ways. He’s a smaller stretch forward — which, in my opinion, will compliment Steven Crowl and what he does well offensively — while giving Wisconsin another shooter.
He’s also not someone who would command a ton of shot attempts and would fit pretty seamlessly into their offensive system. Per HoopMath, 61.6% of D’Amico’s shots come from beyond the arc, while 32.3% of his attempts come in the paint, scoring at a 56.0% clip.
Synergy data shows that D’Amico averages 0.963 points per possession in the half-court, which is in the 72nd percentile nationally.
Because Wisconsin basketball doesn’t have a clear heir apparent ready to assume the starting role at the four, adding a stop-gap option that can provide quality minutes and space the floor on offense will be a must for the Badgers coaching staff. They’ve also expressed interest in a graduate transfer from UNC-Greensboro.
