West Virginia Signs Illinois Transfer Amani Hansberry

“Amani has a great motor and a nose for the ball,” WVU HC Darian DeVries said. “He has a very unique skill set and will give us great versatility at both ends of the floor. I love the way he competes, and he will bring a winning mindset.”

Hansberry (6-foot-8) spent one season at Illinois, averaging 2.4 points and 2.1 rebounds in 19 games during his freshman year. Hansberry ended the season strong by scoring eight points vs. UConn in the Elite-8. In his limited time played, Hansberry shot 45% from the field and 30% from three.

Hansberry has a connection to new associate HC Chester Frazier and he is familiar with West Virginia before Illinois. The Silver Spring, Md. native was recruited under Bob Huggins’ staff back in 2022.

Hansberry is the second Fighting Illini transfer to commit and sign with the Mountaineers over the past 24 hours, joining Sencire Harris. Harris is a 6-foot-4 redshirt sophomore with three years left.

West Virginia currently has three transfer commitments: Harris, Hansberry and Tucker DeVries, with one high school signee KJ Tenner. WVU also has two scholarship players remaining from last season with Noah Farrakhan and Ofri Naveh.
