With the recent news that Premier Boxing Champions & Amazon Prime will host a March 30 PPV headlined by Tim Tszyu vs. Keith Thurman, the WBC went ahead and voted unified junior middleweight champion Jermell Charlo as their “champion in recess.” This move by the WBC will allow the fight between Sebastian Fundora & Serhii Bohachuk, which is on the same night, to be for the interim WBC title.

Earlier today, the WBC sent an email concerning their decision to make Charlo a champion in recess.

“The WBC voted in favor to place WBC super welterweight champion, Jermell Charlo in “champion in recess“ status after analyzing the specific circumstances in the division. Jermell’s last fight was in the super middleweight division, and there is no certainty that he will return to fight in the super welterweight one.

The WBC hereby confirms the upcoming fight for the WBC super welterweight championship between Serhii Bohachuk, current WBC Continental Americas champion, and former WBC interim champion Sebastian Fundora.”

This adds to the March 30 card and brings more scrutiny to the WBC as their #1 contender, Charles Conwell, was passed up for the interim title shot. For now, an interim title will be on the line when Fundora faces Bohachuk.
