Former Raider Anthony Wayne Smith convicted of murder

Former Raiders defensive end Anthony Wayne Smith was convicted on three counts of murder by a Southern California jury on Thursday. A mistrial was declared on a fourth count.

Smith, who played for the Raiders from 1991 to 1997, now faces a maximum of life in prison without the possibility parole.

The conviction stems from accusations that Smith shot and killed Kevin and Ricky Nettles in 1999, and stabbed to death Dennis Henderson in 2001. Jurors deadlocked over the 2008 shooting death of
Maurilio Ponce, which led to a mistrial.

The hearing for the 48-year-old Smith's sentencing, along with a hearing on whether prosecutors plan to re-try Smith for the Ponce killing, was set for Dec. 21.

Smith's defense attorney, Michael S. Evans, stated he plans to file a motion for a new trial.

Smith recorded 57.5 sacks in his seven years playing for the Raiders in Los Angeles and Oakland.
