Aaron Rodgers set to pass Johnny Unitas as fastest QB to 30,000 yards

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is at that place in his career when he's going to start being mentioned with the all-time greats.

Since taking over for Brett Favre as the Packers quarterback in 2008, he's compiled 180 more touchdowns (239) than interceptions (59). He's also led the Packers to a .694 winning percentage while totaling a ridiculous 106.5 quarterback rating.

While it's hard to compare quarterback stats between players of different eras, it's safe to say Rodgers is well on his way to becoming one of the greatest signal callers in the history of the NFL.

On Sunday against the San Diego Chargers, Rodgers has an opportunity to surpass Johnny Unitas as the fastest quarterback to reach 30,000 passing yards.

What makes this so amazing is that no other quarterback in this era has come close to accomplishing this feat. Blindly looking at it, the expectation had to be that Peyton Manning or Tom Brady would have already passed Unitas.

That's obviously not the case.

The simple fact that Unitas' record has existed for a half century is absolutely insane. Playing in an era that wasn't necessarily defined by eye-opening passing numbers, Unitas' performance continues to stand the test of time.

It's safe to say Rodgers will find a way to put up 186 yards within his next 67 pass attempts. In fact, there's a good chance he will surpass that mark on Sunday against the Chargers.

In comparing quarterbacks of this era, it took Tom Brady nearly 4,200 pass attempts to reach this plateau. With the Indianapolis Colts, Peyton Manning had to toss the rock 3,900 times to reach 30,000 yards passing.

With Manning slated to surpass Brett Favre's career yardage mark of 71,838 later this season, that's also a record Rodgers could conceivably break when all is said and done.

The Packers' quarterback would have to put up his current single-game career average in passing yards for the next nine seasons to break that record, at which point he will be a tad over 40 years old.

In terms of touchdown passes, Rodgers is way ahead of the game. Manning currently holds that record with 536. It's safe to say he'll find a way to finish this season, and likely his career, with 550-plus touchdowns. With 239 touchdown passes in the equivalent of seven seasons as a starter, Rodgers is on pace to hit the 550 mark about the same time he would break the career yardage record.

These stats tells us a story of a quarterback that's playing the best football of any player at his position in the history of the league. He's doing so in the golden age of elite quarterback play, where there are as many as eight future Hall of Famers currently active in the league.
