Mets to wear 1986 uniforms as regular season alternates

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the team’s 1986 World Series championship over the Boston Red Sox in one of most iconic Fall Classics in MLB history, the New York Mets will wear the uniform donned by that title-winning team on occasion throughout the 2016 MLB season.

The team announced earlier this offseason it would pay tribute to the ’86 squad with a weekend commemorating the organization’s last championship. It is scheduled for Memorial Day Weekend on May 27-29 with the highlight coming on the 28th when former manager Davey Johnson and every other player from the championship team has been invited back for a pregame ceremony.

But Wednesday’s announcement from the Mets indicates the celebration will last all season long as the iconic uniforms from 1986 will be used as alternates and worn several times.

“The 1986 Mets made an indelible mark on the baseball and New York sports scene, capturing the hearts of fans like few other teams,” said Mets COO Jeff Wilpon, via Eye on Baseaball. “This 30th anniversary celebration provides our fans a way to re-connect their excitement to the historic achievements of 1986.”

It most certainly is a fitting way to pay tribute to one of the most dramatic and memorable World Series victories in Major League Baseball history.
